Pagani was created by a guy from Argentina, called Horacio Pagani.
He moved to Italy, I don't know when, nor why.
There -in Italy- he founded the Pagani Automobili, the company that builds the Zonda.
This car was already in production since 1999, but I think the fame came only in 2001, when 'Gran Turismo 3' was launched. Almost everyone first saw the Pagani Zonda in this game.
