The Last Year by broettonavarro The Last Year by broettonavarro
Dodge Viper GTS, made by Matchbox.
1:59 scale.
Also seen in here: [link]

This Viper was the #1 model of 75 miniatures Matchbox sold in 1997.
By those years, I was about to get into the automotive world, thanks to the release of the Gran Turismo games in 1998.
And because of that, I was also about to end up liking diecast miniatures of cars.

I was a mere kid, but I already knew the biggest companies were Hot Wheels and Matchbox.
But what me and my friends never understood was "Why is Matchbox a rival company of Hot Wheels, if both are owned by Mattel?"

Matchbox always seemed to be a rival of Hot Wheels.
That didn't make any sense to us. It was clearly visible that Matchbox miniatures were different from Hot Wheels toys. The pricetag was the same, but still... it was nonsense to us. Why Mattel didn't sold everything as Hot Wheels or Matchbox? Why keep different companies that sold the same products (miniatures), with the same pricetag, but with different brands?

We thought Matchbox was a rival of Hot Wheels, because Matchbox was a rival of Hot Wheels... until Mattel bought the british company in 1997. The same time period when I started to pay more attention to miniatures and so on.
We missed the last years of Matchbox being a company of its own.

This Dodge Viper was made in 1997. The last year before Mattel bought the Matchbox brand, and messed up some kids minds.

... I always prefered Matchbox models than Hot Wheels. And I hate the fact that Mattel doesn't sell Matchbox miniatures in Brazil since 2008.

in the early to mid 90's I bought a matchbox car every couple of weeks or so and didn't take them out of the box, only to come home one day from school to find my younger brother playing with them all in the sand pit grrr. Hotwheels at that time I thought were too over the top and didn't represent the type of cars I liked.

I used to play a lot with my miniatures when I was a kid too

Hot Wheels has some nice models, and there's a few 'over the top' cars that I like. The Spoiler Sport, for example, is something I've been looking for for months.

now i realized why!

The rear wheels are the same size of the front! Hot Wheels cars have the rear wheels bigger than the front wheel XD

But still... You have plenty of Hot Wheels minis... :iconsuspiciousplz:

I have plenty of Hot Wheels miniatures, because they were always easier to be found on the pegs.

Also, Mattel stopped selling Matchbox in Brazil in 2008, so it's been more than 4 years since I last bought a new Matchbox. Meanwhile I didn't stopped to buy new Hot Wheels.

Now that I got two new Matchbox to my collection, they happen to be old castings...
This Viper, from 1997, and the other miniature, from 1999.

Matchbox is now reaaaally bland.

Only a few cars tickle my fancy. Like the R500 Caterham, or the Miura, or the astonishing Europa Lotus

Yes, I have to agree with you.
Most of their models aren't nice.
Still, when Matchbox makes a good miiature, it's a superb miniature.
...and always better than its "Hot Wheels cousin".

Just look at these pictures, to get a better idea of what I'm talking about: [link] [link]
